The Marvin Carlson Theatre Center, Shanghai Theatre Academy

In 2015, City University of New York Distinguished Professor of Theatre Studies Marvin Carlson was added to the faculty of the Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA), and the Marvin Carlson Theatre Center was officially opened on the STA campus. The Center has two primary aims: the first is to establish a series of English-language seminars at STA in Western theatre studies, with the goal of eventually establishing a Ph.D. program in that subject.  The first such course was taught by Kaiqi Hu in the spring of 2017 with an enrollment of 21 students.  The second aim is to work for a continuing cooperation of these two schools.  The first step in this cooperation has been the exchange of faculty and students, for varying periods of time.  The first STA student, Liu Xuan, studied at CUNY from the spring of 2015 to the spring of 2016 and the second, Gui Han, arrived in the spring of 2016.  In October of 2015, Professor Gong of STA visited CUNY heading a delegation of STA faculty and students.  They met CUNY faculty and Provost Lennihan and discussed plans for future cooperation.  The Center plans to build and expand both the exchanges and the courses.
